Investigations carried out to recommend new tax system for Tobacco

The Joint Drug Prevention Committee, headed by the President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday, (May 09th) decided to carry out a series of comprehensive investigations in order to recommend a new tax system for tobacco.
In addition, the President’s Media Division stated that the committee also discussed on preparing a new mechanism for rehabilitation of drug addicts and went on to note that a special drug prevention program targeting school children was also subjected to discussion.
Suggestions include mandatory imprisonment for offenders who have been convicted for more than three prior offenses related to illegal alcohol.


The President has also stated that, preventive action is more important than to punish drug addicts.
