Mohamed Nasheed sentenced to 13 years in prison

Former president of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has been found guilty of ordering the arrest of a judge and was sentenced to 13 years in prison on Friday,  March 13. The former president had ordered the arrest in 2012 during his time as President.
Nasheed was cleared over the incident before being convicted again shortly after. The verdict is the latest chapter in three turbulent years in which Nasheed, the first democratically elected leader of Maldives, was ousted in disputed circumstances: then narrowly defeated in a controversial election.
The news of Nasheed’s arrest on terrorism charges brought thousands of his supporters to the streets of Male, the capital of Maldives.
