Several prisoners to be set free

Several prisoners facing jail terms for minor offences are to be set free tomorrow, the Commissioner General of Prisons Chandraratne Pallegama said today.
He said that the prisoners will be freed on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena to mark independence day tomorrow.
Pallegama said that those who are in prison after being unable to pay their fines, will not need to pay the fine as part of the amnesty being offered for independence day.
He also said that those who complete 75 years as of tomorrow and are in prison for minor offences, will also be set freed tomorrow.
“All those in jail for serious crimes will not be freed tomorrow,” Pallegama emphasised.
The Commissioner General of Prisons said that family members of those in prison will also be able to spend more than 20 minutes with the inmates tomorrow and also give them food.
