Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today informed President Maithripala Sirisena that India was committed to further develop its partnership with Sri Lanka.
Modi gave the assurance during talks with President Maithripala Sirisena when they met in New Delhi today.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Modi said that the mandate Sirisena received at the elections last month represents the collective voice of Sri Lanka and the aspirations of the people for a united country.
He also said that India is pleased to be Sri Lanka’s largest trading partner and expressed his support for balanced trade in both directions.
Prime Minister Modi said that India and Sri Lanka will further improve air and sea connectivity between Sri Lanka and India.
Modi said that both leaders also attached the highest importance to the fishermen issue and will address fishermen associations on both sides soon.
He thanked the Sri Lanka president for his invitation to visit Sri Lanka and said he was eagerly looking forward to visiting Sri Lanka next month.
